Halal Food in Bishan

Block 511 Bishan Street 13 stands within one of Singapore's most distinctive HDB estates, built on land that once held the largest Chinese cemetery in the country. Bishan derives its name from the Cantonese term Peck San Theng, meaning pavilions on the green, referring to the burial ground established in 1870 by Cantonese and Hakka immigrants. After the government acquired the land in 1979, a mass exhumation of 170,000 graves was carried out in 1980, with redevelopment beginning in 1982. Bishan became the first HDB new town to depart from the brutalist architectural style that characterised earlier estates. The town's apartment blocks vary in height and arrangement, positioned at different angles rather than in uniform rows, while pitched roofs became a signature feature closely associated with Bishan's skyline. The estate was built in stages from 1983 to 1989, comprising four neighbourhoods: Shunfu, Bishan East, Bishan North, and Bishan West (later renamed Sin Ming Garden). The mature estate offers residents comprehensive amenities including Bishan MRT station and interchange, Junction 8 shopping mall, Bishan Park with its naturalised river, and excellent schools. The estate's thoughtful design, combined with its central location and strong transport connectivity, has made Bishan one of Singapore's most desirable residential areas. The transformation from burial ground to thriving community represents one of Singapore's most remarkable urban development stories.
