Halal Food in Bras Basah Complex
Built in 1980 under Singapore urban renewal programme, Bras Basah Complex has evolved from a bold urban planning vision into the island unofficial "Book City". Located at 231 Bain Street, this mixed-development complex was specifically planned and approved to be a book centre from its inception, with early batches of renters legally required to sell books. The building rich cultural significance traces back to the early 1980s when merchants from the historic Bras Basah Road and North Bridge Road relocated to the newly constructed complex, forming the Bras Basah Complex Merchants Association to protect their collective interests. At its height, the complex housed dozens of bookshops, educational publishers, exam-paper vendors, and stationery suppliers, becoming a legendary destination for students and book lovers. Throughout the eighties and nineties, the atrium hosted numerous exhibits, art galleries, musical festivals, and the wildly popular xinyao concerts that drew hundreds of fans. Following major renovations in 2004-2005 led by the merchants association, the complex has successfully reinvented itself while maintaining its literary heritage. Today, alongside traditional bookshops, new tenants include studios, galleries, music schools, and printing workshops, creating a dynamic ecosystem that continues to draw students, educators, collectors and casual visitors seeking both knowledge and culture in the heart of Singapore civic district.
