Halal Food in Bugis Street

Bugis Street today stands as Singapore largest street-shopping location, though its current incarnation at 261 Victoria Street actually sits on Albert Street, a short distance from the original legendary Bugis Street. This transformation tells a remarkable story of urban renewal and cultural evolution that spans decades. The original Bugis Street first appeared on maps in 1857 as Charles Street, bounded by Victoria Street, North Bridge Road, Middle Road and Rochor Road. Named after the seafaring Bugis traders from South Sulawesi who sailed up and moored their boats here in the 19th century, the area developed into one of Singapore most internationally renowned attractions from the 1950s to 1980s. However, by 1984, the government announced plans to redevelop the prime land, citing development needs and the upcoming Mass Rapid Transit station at Victoria Street. Bulldozers demolished the old shophouses in October 1985. A decade later, in September 1995, Bugis Junction rose on the site of the former streets, while the new Bugis Street was recreated nearby. The modern Bugis Street is a vibrant three-storey maze-like complex hosting approximately 800 stalls selling everything from trendy fashion and accessories to electronics and souvenirs. Operating daily from 11am to 10pm, this squeaky-clean pedestrianised shopping street opposite Bugis Junction continues to draw both tourists and locals seeking affordable finds, though the controversial nightlife scene that made the original famous has been completely sanitised from this family-friendly retail destination.
