Halal Food in Changi Village
Changi Village carries the weight of Singapore's colonial and wartime history on its shoulders. The settlement expanded considerably after the completion of Changi Cantonment in 1937, when traders and hawkers set up shop to serve the British military base. During World War II, the area witnessed darker days as Changi Prison became a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. Following the war, the village resumed its role as an off-base suburbia for British troops, evolving into a multicultural marketplace that served the military community throughout the 1960s. The 1970s brought sweeping changes as kampongs made way for Changi Airport development and land reclamation. Traditional shophouses and attap houses disappeared, replaced by five Housing Development Board blocks incorporating ground-floor shops and a market-cum-hawker centre. By 1976, a new cooked food centre with 74 stalls and a market with 78 stalls were fully operational, transforming how residents accessed food and daily necessities. Today, Changi Village at 1 Changi Village Road has emerged as a beloved destination for locals and travellers seeking authentic hawker fare and seaside charm. The area's seafood restaurants serve signature dishes like chili crab, black pepper crab, and sambal stingray, while the hawker centre's nasi lemak stalls have achieved legendary status. The village retains a laid-back atmosphere that contrasts sharply with Singapore's urban intensity, offering visitors a glimpse into the nation's pre-independence character alongside contemporary comforts.
