Halal Food in Crawford Street

Crawford Street connects Lavender Street at its intersection with Kallang Road in the north to Republic Avenue at Beach Road, running through the Lavender subzone of Kallang. The street bears the name of Dr John Crawfurd, Singapore's second Resident from 1783 to 1868, though a recording error resulted in the spelling as Crawford rather than Crawfurd. Historically known as Jalan Rochor on George Coleman's 1836 Map of Singapore, the street has witnessed the area's evolution from kampong settlements to urban development. The Crawford Street area sits within Lavender, a neighbourhood historically filled with vegetable farms and sugarcane plantations worked by Chinese immigrants in the 1800s. Ironically named Lavender Street despite being one of the foulest-smelling streets in colonial Singapore due to nearby Kallang Gasworks and nightsoil fertilizer use, the area has transformed while retaining elements of its heritage character. The 1964 racial riots that occurred here profoundly shaped Singapore's subsequent policies on racial harmony and multiculturalism. Today, the area offers a glimpse of Singapore from past decades, with gentrification gradually reshaping the neighbourhood while maintaining connections to its layered historical identity.
