Located at 120 Arab Street in the historic Kampong Glam neighbourhood, this building stands at the heart of Singapore's Malay and Arab cultural heritage district. Arab Street, one of the few streets in Kampong Glam that has retained its original name, was designated for the Arab community in Sir Stamford Raffles' 1822 town plan. The area was given to Sultan Hussein Shah as settlement for his palace and subjects, where he built the Istana Kampong Glam. The street quickly became a thriving hub for Malay, Bugis, and Arab traders, with businesses focusing on textiles, spices, and Islamic goods. Today, Kampong Glam retains strong ties to the Native-Malay and Muslim community and is sometimes termed the "Muslim Quarter" due to its history. The area blends historical significance with modern experiences, featuring conserved shophouses that have been transformed into trendy cafes, boutique shops, and restaurants while maintaining their architectural heritage. The nearby Sultan Mosque and Malay Heritage Centre anchor the neighbourhood's cultural identity, while the colourful facades of shophouses along Arab Street and adjacent Haji Lane have made the area one of Singapore's most photogenic and culturally rich districts.
