It seems there are several polarizing reviews, and I can't speak for the times others have had poor experiences here because I wasn't there at the same time. However, what I can say is that I have never had a bad experience at Putra Minang at Bencoolen in the more than a dozen times I have eaten there.
Firstly, I think like how many people don't know and can't tell the difference between Hill Street Tai Hwa and High Street Tai Wah for Pork Noodles, many here don't know the difference between Nasi Padang and Nasi Campur (local Malay rice). To be fair, it doesn't help that many local Malay Rice Stalls call themselves Nasi Padang simply because it sounds better than Nasi Campur.
What's the difference? The origins of Nasi Padang mean that the recipes and cooking originated from a place called Padang, in Indonesia. Therefore, if one eats at Putra Minang thinking and expecting Singapore or Malaysian style Malay Rice, then they have already gotten off on the wrong foot. Simply ask any Indonesian living or working in Singapore for some months, and they'll likely tell you that Putra Minang is as authentic Padang food as one can get in Singapore.
Yes, the flavours are punchier. Yes, their cooking is generally a little saltier. Yes, their meats are a little stringier. And THESE are all things that make them AUTHENTIC.
So, please, know your foods before criticizing. It doesn't mean that because you don't like a certain genre of food, they dish out one-star foods. You're just being mean and ignorant.

Indonesian Padang food never disappoints; it's very authentic and nice compared to Malay versions. The chilies are also good. It's a great place to eat with a pleasant environment too.

The Putra Minang food concept is really tucked away in the city town. Inside here, it will satisfy any rice-eating lovers. The platter comes complete with sambal paru, terong sumbat, sambal goreng, and many more. But their signature rendang minang truly stands out. The rendang meat is cooked with all the spices and has an easy-to-eat texture. Rare moments and absolutely goodness.

If you're looking for authentic and flavorful Padang cuisine, Putra Minang is a great choice! Their rendang is absolutely amazing—tender, rich in spices, and cooked to perfection. It’s easily one of the best rendang dishes I’ve had in Singapore.
The restaurant is also very conveniently located, near both the mosque and the MRT station, making it an ideal spot for a quick meal or a gathering with friends and family. The pricing is reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, offering great value for those craving delicious Indonesian food.
Another great thing is that they allow bookings for iftar, making it a perfect place to break fast during Ramadan with a comforting and satisfying meal.
Highly recommend for anyone looking for authentic Indonesian flavors in a cozy and accessible setting! Will definitely come back!

Indonesian nasi padang is always a hit with me, and this place remains my go-to spot for authentic Indonesian nasi padang. (Sari Ratu on Pahang Street used to be my go-to, but they've closed down.) They offer a wide variety of options here. I ordered via Grab for a "built yr own craving box". It's $12 per pack, and I chose the banana leaves pack. The portion was huge and could easily be shared by two people.
