This shophouse in Kampong Glam's conservation area gained renewed attention in 2023 when it became home to a striking mural by Singaporean artist Yip Yew Chong. Completed over 25 days in August, the Kampong Gelam Mural depicts the district's rich history and cultural heritage, showcasing early days by the seafront when the Sultan Mosque featured its original Nusantara-style pyramidal roof. The building itself represents the architectural character that defines this historic quarter. As part of the Arab Street commercial district, it stands among rows of conserved shophouses that date back to the mid-19th century. The area has evolved from its origins as a residential kampong for Muslim communities of diverse origins into a vibrant mix of heritage businesses, artisan shops and modern cafes, while maintaining its distinctive cultural identity within Singapore's urban landscape.
