Halal Food in 505 Beach Road
Golden Mile Food Centre at 505 Beach Road has been serving Singaporeans since 1975, when it was built to resettle street hawkers from Jalan Sultan. Also known as Beach Road Food Centre or Beach Road Army Market, this two-storey hawker hub sits a five-minute walk from Nicoll Highway MRT and carries a distinct character shaped by its proximity to army camps and its history as a gathering point for national servicemen.\n\nThe food centre earned the "Army Market" nickname from the military paraphernalia and camping gear sold on the third floor - mess tins, boots, socks, towels - catering to NSmen and their families. Downstairs, the basement and first level house stalls serving long-standing favourites: satay, char kway teow, chicken rice, old-school desserts, and what some claim is the driest Hokkien mee in Singapore, where the stock simmers until it evaporates, locking flavours into the noodles. Wedang, a Michelin Bib Gourmand-listed Malay stall, has brought additional recognition to the centre.\n\nMost stalls operate from 11am to 8-9pm. For those who remember when Beach Road was less gentrified and Golden Mile Complex still buzzed with Thai businesses, this food centre is a reminder of that era - unpretentious, practical, and stubbornly authentic.
