Halal Food in Evertop Chicken Rice- Geylang Serai
Located at Block 1 Geylang Serai, this building is part of the Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre, which stands at the heart of Singapore's Malay community and cultural heritage. The market traces its lineage to pre-World War II days, with a makeshift hawker shelter established at the entrance of Kampong Geylang Serai before 1930. The official market opened in 1964, coinciding unfortunately with the racial riots of that year, though it persevered to become a beloved community institution. In 2006, the market was demolished and rebuilt, reopening in 2009 with a design shaped like a traditional Malay Kampong house at a cost of 18.2 million dollars. The name "Geylang Serai" originates from a lemongrass processing factory (Kilang Serai in Malay) that once stood at this very location. As one of the oldest Malay settlements in Singapore, Geylang Serai is known throughout the Malay Archipelago as the Malay emporium of Singapore. The food centre was historically considered the place to find Singapore's largest variety of Muslim food, and it continues to serve this role today, functioning as both a dining destination and a vital community hub that embodies Singapore's multicultural heritage while maintaining special significance for the Malay community.
