Takara Grilled Seafood has earned its place among the halal-certified seafood stalls at the legendary Newton Food Centre, located at 500 Clemenceau Avenue, Singapore. Operating from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM Monday through Sunday, this stall has been serving grilled and cooked seafood for over 20 years, building a reputation for quality preparation and consistent flavors.
While Newton Food Centre hosts numerous seafood stalls, Takara stands out as one of only a handful with halal certification, making it a crucial option for Muslim diners seeking the authentic Newton seafood experience. The stall offers classic Singaporean seafood dishes prepared in the zi char style, with specialties including Chilli Crab, Shoratin Soup, and Fried Rice.
Customer reviews highlight several standout dishes. The pepper crab receives particular praise for being "so spicy and nice," delivering the robust flavors that seafood lovers seek. The BBQ stingray earns recognition for perfect execution—"neither overdone nor underdone, soft and juicy"—demonstrating the grill mastery that comes from two decades of experience.
The restaurant provides a relaxed, inviting atmosphere typical of hawker center dining, with friendly staff who guide customers through menu options and preparation styles. For special occasions, Takara also offers catering services, bringing their seafood expertise to private events and gatherings.
It's worth noting that while Takara Grilled Seafood operates at Newton Food Centre and serves seafood in local Singaporean style, it should not be confused with Japanese restaurants despite the Japanese-sounding name. The cuisine is firmly rooted in Singapore's hawker traditions, offering dishes like chilli crab, pepper crab, and BBQ stingray rather than Japanese fare. For Muslim diners seeking halal-certified seafood at one of Singapore's most famous food centers, Takara represents a reliable, established choice with proven quality.

The worst service EVER. All we ordered was fried rice, sweet & sour chicken (which had no fish ♂️) and baby kailan. The kailan came first. 15 minutes later the S&S chicken arrived… still no rice. 20 minutes later the rice arrived We were always told it would be here next, but lots of other people were served instead. There are much better places to try here. DO NOT EAT HERE!
I gave 3 stars for atmosphere because it’s a great atmosphere in the food court, but not for the food stall itself.

Dined at Takara Grilled Seafood at Newton Food Centre and ordered the fried baby squid (medium), mussels (medium), and a large fried rice for 51 SGD. While the price felt a bit high for a hawker setting, the portions were generous and most of the food was tasty. The mussels, however, had a slightly raw taste. On the positive side, the service was friendly and efficient, and they provided cutlery and serviettes, a thoughtful touch that's quite rare in Singapore hawker stalls. Overall, a unique and satisfying experience.

The salted fried rice tasted purely of salt, and the crab dish was terrible. The fried rice for 3 pax was only enough for one person, and we were given some extra plain rice to compensate. We should have tried another shop.

Can't understand why some rated it so high. Honestly, the stingray chilli sambal tasted too salty, and the stall owner even missed out the shrimp chinchalok sauce for dipping. The seafood was quite expensive at $12. Tried it once only. Anyway, it's a halal stall located beside Best Satay.

Given the many BBQ seafood stalls here at Newton Food Centre, I feel they ought to buck up. Honestly, the food is very average. It's not bad, but it's not great either. The saving grace is that they open their stall quite late into the night. So, when we walked in looking for late-night supper options, they were one of the only few stalls left open. If there were other options, this wouldn't be my choice.

Nearby to the washroom, making it easy and convenient for hand washing. The food and prices are a lot cheaper than other stalls, especially those listed in Michelin. Food portions are good value for money. It's a must to order their seafood, whether grilled or steamed in garlic or Cantonese, Teochew styles.

Enjoyed the BBQ stingray, Gong Gong, and French bean stir-fry. Didn't expect much, but all three dishes hit the spot. Portions were a little small, but I guess that's how things are with F&B in general now. No pics as I wasn't expecting above-average yummy levels, so by the time I realized, everything was gone. Will return to eat!

Delicious food, albeit a tad pricey. I'm still trying to figure out how they're able to cook so many tasty meals from a very small kitchen setup. It can get crowded, so expect to wait to "reserve" your seats.

November 2024, This stall is not bad, but the chilli is a bit on the salty side, though still acceptable to me. The fish is fresh and the portions are just right. The lady who served us was good. Prices are normally higher in this hawker centre as it is patronised by tourists. The reviews for this stall were not good, but to me, it was just okay. Wait for your feedback.
