Halal Food in Ayer Rajah Food Centre
Ayer Rajah Food Centre at 503 West Coast Drive has been serving the West Coast community and National University of Singapore students since 1979, establishing itself as a culinary institution in western Singapore. Recently reopened on 1 August 2022 following renovations, the centre now sports a distinctive bright green exterior that signals its refreshed facilities. Housing approximately 80 stalls spanning diverse cuisines, Ayer Rajah has achieved remarkable recognition with seventeen hawker stalls winning the prestigious Singapore Top Heritage Food award by the International Business Federation—an extraordinary achievement considering only 110 such awards exist island-wide. The food centre has cultivated a reputation as Singapore's premier destination for Indian-Muslim cuisine, with the majority of stalls specializing in mee goreng, roti prata, soup kambing, Indian rojak, and other halal favourites that draw devotees from across the island. Tokyo BBQ Stingray has earned legendary status with their barbecued stingray rumoured to be among Singapore's finest, delivering perfectly charred fish with smoky, spicy sambal. Hong Kong Yummy Soup operates only three days weekly yet commands snaking queues for their super-authentic Hong Kong-style double-boiled soups that require hours of patient simmering. Joo Chiat Prawn Mee cleverly retained its original name after relocating from the east, ensuring loyal customers could still find their beloved prawn noodles. The diversity extends beyond Indian-Muslim specialties to encompass comprehensive hawker offerings. West Coast BBQ Seafood and Xing Tian Yuan Restaurant provide zi char options for group dining, while Mantul Ayam Penyet brings Indonesian flavours with their signature smashed fried chicken. The combination of heritage award-winning stalls, specialized Indian-Muslim cuisine, and wallet-friendly prices makes Ayer Rajah Food Centre an essential pilgrimage site for western residents and food explorers. Its proximity to NUS ensures a steady stream of hungry students who have turned this hawker centre into their extended dining hall, cementing its role as both community hub and culinary treasure.
