The development arose from Singapore's inaugural Government Land Sales programme launched in 1967, when three plots were tendered on 99-year leasehold for the first time. Above the retail podium rise twin towers housing office and residential spaces. The tenant mix reflects the centre's Chinatown location, with Chinese supermarkets, money changers, tour operators and massage services catering to both locals and tourists exploring the heritage district. Food options span multiple floors, offering visitors diverse choices from quick snacks to sit-down meals. Despite its heritage significance, People's Park Centre is now slated for redevelopment, signalling the end of an era for this pioneer shopping complex. Its location beside Chinatown MRT and proximity to People's Park Complex, a separate brutalist building from 1970, positions it within a retail cluster that has served the Chinese community for decades. The impending redevelopment reflects broader changes in Singapore's urban landscape as older commercial buildings make way for more contemporary mixed-use developments.
