Mad for Mala represents the growing enthusiasm for mala cuisine within Singapore's halal dining scene, reflecting how Chinese spicy food has become increasingly accessible to Muslim diners. The popularity of mala xiang guo and malatang has sparked significant interest, with Singapore's Islamic religious council issuing nearly double the halal certificates for food establishments in 2018 compared to a decade earlier, driven partly by Muslim Singaporeans' desire to try bold new flavours.

Mala cuisine, characterised by its numbing Sichuan peppercorns and fiery chillies, offers a customisable dining experience where customers select raw ingredients to be stir-fried or boiled in intensely spiced broths. The halal mala movement has enabled Muslim diners to enjoy this Chinese culinary trend that has taken Singapore by storm, with numerous establishments now offering halal-certified versions of this addictive spicy food.

The phrase "mad for mala" captures how Singaporeans across communities have embraced this cuisine, with halal options allowing everyone to participate in the mala craze. Whether preferring the dry stir-fried mala xiang guo or the soup-based malatang, diners can customise spice levels from mild to volcanic. The availability of halal mala represents broader changes in Singapore's food landscape, where traditional boundaries between cuisines blur and innovative establishments create fusion experiences that maintain religious dietary compliance while delivering authentic flavours.

I wish we had a zero-star rating. The lady standing there was very rude, and the ordering process was so slow. We were given a buzzer to wait for the food, but it never rang. When I asked if the food was ready, the lady gave me a blank look. Apparently, my food was already on the table, but she forgot to pack the rice. The food was lousy with a funny taste; it wasn't mala, it tasted like tomato sauce. It was a huge disappointment with their service, and an even bigger disappointment with the food.

The food was not cooked properly; all the meats served were still raw. I've eaten here twice, and both times, all the meat I ate was raw.

It's a coffeeshop, so I don't expect fantastic standards. However, there must be a minimum level of hygiene involved. After picking my food, which included raw chicken, the lady at the counter simply told me to put the tongs back. I didn't pass any food safety test, but that sounded extremely unhygienic and potentially dangerous to everyone. Never coming here again until things change.

Misleading promotion. The promotion stated: spend $20 and get 6 free buns. I spent $28 in one receipt. When I decided to separate the mild and spicy items into two separate containers, it voided the promotion. Upon verification, the staff said my order had to be in one container worth more than $20. Bad first experience.

Located at Kedai Kopi. It was busy on a Saturday late afternoon with few seats available. Although there are many seating options, they are a bit squeezed. The atmosphere is clean. The grilled fish mala hotpot was a good size for 4 people and affordable. However, it wasn't very spicy for a 'Mala' serving. The rice bowl is small, so it's good to ask for plates or an extra bowl.

Everything was pleasant: the price, the spice level, and even the service! It was so spicy that I couldn't finish it, so I wanted to take it away. He didn't charge anything for the takeaway! Usually, shops would charge, but he didn't, so do eat here! Love it.
