Food Republic has become way more expensive. Complaints common across Google reviews mention absurd charging at the economic rice stall. The bill for one fish, one meat, and one vegetable came up to $9.50. The taste was abysmal. Both the dry and soup versions of the bak kut teh were also quite pathetic with their portions. The carrot cake was average.

The food court has moved to B3, and while prices have gone up, the taste remains unacceptable. The roast meat stall's char siew was dry and tough. At the Hokkien prawn noodle stall, only the prawn noodles were acceptable. The economical rice stall is a price trap; only a few dishes are truly economical and they are hidden below the expensive options. Choosing other ala carte dishes will easily cost you $10. As for the Famosa stall, forget it. The claypot rice stall offered pathetic portions for the claypot rice and expensive BKT. The fishball noodles had very sticky noodles, heavily loaded with pork lard. The chicken rice was tasteless. The Indonesian food stall is the only one worth patronizing regularly; it's expensive but delicious.

The cai fan stall is an absolute rip-off. $21 for everything in the photo. I don't know since when normal pork chop and sweet and sour pork are considered premium. Even their porridge is like kid-sized. My 9-year-old felt hungry after we finished. Seriously, just turn around and go elsewhere and you won't feel so cheated. The only good bit is that the place is very Instagram-able. Otherwise, I would not recommend.

Nice retro look, but that's not how you increase the price of usual kopitiam food, especially when the taste is mediocre too. For reference: Economical rice (2 veg, 1 meat, and fried rice): $9 Roasted Chicken rice (with an egg): $6.80 Ice kopi: $3.10 The drink store uncle didn't even ask if I wanted a big or small size. The price shown on the menu is for a small size, but he assumed we wanted a big size and charged accordingly. I wanted to get herbal soup, but the uncle said they only had a few available. However, the menu only showed two as unavailable. We were there the whole time, so I don't know why he couldn't just tell us what was actually available.

The food court has moved to B3 level now. It has a nice kampong vibe there, giving it a nostalgic feel! Prices have gone up, and there are some new stalls compared to before. The taohu telor is still nice with plenty of gravy, though it's nearly ten bucks now! The claypot rice was so-so, but the crispy rice at the bottom of the pot was nice! The soup was very hearty, with a home-cooked feel to it!

Some thoughts on the ambience of Food Republic @ City Square Mall... The revamped food court bears

Some thoughts on the ambience of Food Republic @ City Square Mall... The revamped food court bears resemblance to the street food al fresco dining in 70s-80s Singapore. Upon entering its new premise at Level B3, the retro décor and songs on the playlist bring back memories of yesteryears. FR now occupies the space that used to be part of the carpark. Diners may recall certain streets and carparks in those days would magically transform into bustling eating places as night fell (such as the popular night-time havens in Orchard Road Carpark Market aka Glutton's Square or Whitley Road Hawker Centre located in the shadows of the Thomson flyover). FR's attempt to mimic the open-air street hawking environment and atmosphere is pretty commendable. The old-school furnishing and decoration, blue sky ceiling, multi-coloured light bulbs with a backdrop of food pushcarts, shaky old-style stools, chairs, and foldable tables with vehicles parked in close proximity to the dining area fondly 'transport' diners back in time, as if chomping cooked food outdoors on the streets. Of course, in reality, diners are sheltered from the elements in an air-conditioned environment. Display of well-preserved posters, artifacts, and collectibles accents the old-school charm. It's clear FR goes to great lengths with the retro décor, bringing out nostalgia vibes. From an old barbershop to a quaint radio taxi service hut with an old stone bench, FR isn't short of photo-worthy spots to snap pics and create (more) fond memories with loved ones and pals. Overall, a decent place to get a quick street food fix and enjoy a 'back to the past' atmosphere.

I like coming here for the Malay food – it’s fresh, delicious, and tasty. Prices are reasonable too; a set with meat and two sides usually costs between $7 to $9. I especially love the old-school ambience they’ve created – it brings back the feeling of days gone by. I was born in the '70s and have only heard of "繁华世界" (a prosperous world), but never got to experience it. With Singapore’s 60th anniversary coming up, it would be great if they could consider showing videos to share stories from that era. It would add even more meaning to the experience.

I recently visited an old favorite spot for beef noodles, now relocated to Basement 3, and found it pleasantly uncrowded. The new location has a nostalgic kampung vibe, reminiscent of an old Singapore village, which added a charming touch to the experience. Although the prices were a bit high, the delicious, flavorful beef noodles made it worthwhile. The rich broth and tender beef slices were as delightful as ever, making the visit a memorable one despite the cost.

As of mid-2025, the Food Republic location is on the B3 floor. It's not on the upper floors as some pictures show. They still have many food stalls, and some are nice enough for you to return and dine again.
