The smashed chicken reminds me of my university days. It's similarly priced to the ayam penyet stall in the NUS Science canteen about a decade ago. I believe the chilli could be thicker as it seemed a little watery. Still, the chicken is tender and crispy. It's a nice comfort food.

This is my first time patronising One Punggol Hawker Centre and my first time trying Uncle Penyet. I ordered Ayam Penyet and I must say I enjoyed the food. The rice was piping hot, as were the freshly fried chicken and tofu. The lettuce and cucumber were also very fresh. What stood out the most was their chilli; it was spicy and shiok to eat. The counter Makcik had no issues, though she didn't smile. I understand how hot and uncomfortable it is inside the stall, and moreover, she was wearing a mask too.

This is not the Uncle Penyet shop; it's called Indonesian Express. I don't know which joker tagged it as that shop. The only Uncle Penyet is at Blk 322 Sumang Walk. The chicken was not smashed as advertised and was a bit dry. The fried garlic was nice, and the chilli was not bad. The curry, however, was too bland.

People are queuing non-stop despite the low rating. Perhaps it was previously pulled down by the bad-attitude auntie?
Ordered #6 spicy lemongrass chicken ($6.20) with an add-on of begedil ($1.00). The chicken was soft, and the sambal was sweet with a kick of spice. ️

So, I decided to try the Spicy Lemongrass Chicken Set from this stall, and here’s my take. The dish came with a big, juicy chicken leg, fragrant rice, and a side of sambal and fresh veggies. Presentation-wise, it looked inviting, with the golden hue of the lemongrass marinade shining through.
The chicken was tender and well-cooked, with the lemongrass flavour standing out nicely—it had that earthy, citrusy kick typical of a good lemongrass dish. However, the ‘spicy’ part of the name might feel a bit underwhelming unless you mix in the sambal, which had a nice heat to it but wasn’t overpowering.
The rice was fluffy and had a subtle seasoning, though I think it could’ve been a touch more flavourful to stand out against the strong lemongrass marinade. The fresh cucumber and lettuce were a nice touch, adding some crunch and freshness to the meal.
Overall, it’s a satisfying meal for its price of $6.20, especially if you enjoy the distinct flavour of lemongrass. Just be prepared to rely on the sambal if you’re after a spicier kick!
