GyoGyo represents a distinctive approach to halal Japanese cuisine in Singapore, specializing in authentic Japanese grilled fish preparations and traditional sukiyaki that honor time-tested cooking techniques while ensuring complete halal certification for Muslim diners seeking genuine Japanese dining experiences. This unique restaurant concept combines the precision and artistry of Japanese grilling traditions with the inclusivity of halal certification, creating dining destinations where diverse communities can explore authentic Japanese flavors.
Operating strategic locations including Funan Mall, Plaza Singapura at basement level with direct access to Dhoby Ghaut MRT interchange station, and VivoCity, GyoGyo ensures convenient access for customers throughout Singapore while maintaining consistent quality standards and traditional preparation methods that preserve the authentic characteristics of Japanese cuisine.
The restaurant signature focus on grilled fish showcases an extensive range of premium fish varieties including Salmon, Halibut, Saba, Mero, and Kama, each prepared using traditional Japanese grilling techniques that achieve perfect texture balances between crispy, caramelized exteriors and tender, flaky interiors. These preparations demonstrate the Japanese mastery of fire control and timing that creates distinctive flavors impossible to replicate through other cooking methods.
Traditional Japanese preparation styles include Saikyo Yaki featuring sweet miso marinades that penetrate fish with complex umami flavors, Teriyaki with glossy, savory-sweet glazes that showcase the perfect balance of soy sauce and mirin, Shioyaki emphasizing pure fish flavors enhanced only with perfect salt applications, Nitsuke showcasing simmered preparations in traditional Japanese broths, and Foil Yaki that steams fish in aromatic packages that preserve natural juices and delicate textures.
Beyond fish specialties, GyoGyo accommodates diverse preferences with expertly prepared Chicken, Ebi shrimp, premium Steak, and traditional Unagi eel preparations for those seeking alternatives to fish dishes. Each protein receives the same attention to traditional Japanese cooking techniques and quality ingredient sourcing that defines the restaurant culinary philosophy.
The menu extends to traditional Japanese set meals including Sukiyaki Gozen that combine premium ingredients in authentic hot pot preparations served with Japanese rice or udon noodles and traditional accompaniments. These set meal formats provide complete dining experiences that showcase multiple aspects of Japanese cuisine while maintaining affordable pricing and generous portion sizes.
Japanese rice bowls represent comfort food traditions, featuring premium ingredients served over perfectly prepared rice with traditional seasonings and garnishes that create satisfying meals ideal for both quick lunches and leisurely dinners. The rice preparation follows Japanese standards for texture, temperature, and flavor that complement rather than compete with the featured ingredients.
All grilled fish sets include traditional accompaniments of Japanese rice and miso soup, creating complete meal experiences that honor Japanese dining customs while providing balanced nutrition and satisfying portions. The miso soup, prepared using traditional dashi and miso techniques, provides the warming, umami-rich broths that define authentic Japanese meal structures.
The restaurant commitment to halal certification ensures Muslim diners can explore Japanese cuisine without dietary concerns, though the certification requires yearly renewal to maintain compliance with religious dietary requirements. This dedication to inclusivity makes GyoGyo an important bridge between Japanese culinary traditions and Singapore multicultural dining landscape.
The grilling techniques employed at GyoGyo preserve the natural flavors and nutritional values of premium fish while creating the distinctive textures and aromas that define exceptional Japanese grilled cuisine. The open kitchen concepts at various locations allow diners to witness the skilled preparation methods that transform fresh ingredients into authentic Japanese dishes.
The strategic mall locations provide convenient dining options for shoppers, office workers, and families while offering comfortable environments suitable for business lunches, casual dinners, and special occasion meals. The modern restaurant design combines Japanese aesthetic principles with contemporary comfort to create welcoming spaces.
Whether you are seeking authentic Japanese grilled fish prepared using traditional techniques, exploring halal-certified Japanese cuisine that maintains cultural authenticity, craving comfort food combinations of perfectly grilled proteins with traditional rice and soup accompaniments, or looking for quality Japanese dining experiences in convenient locations, GyoGyo delivers comprehensive Japanese cuisine that honors both culinary traditions and dietary inclusivity.

I recently visited Gyogyo at Plaza Singapura and ordered the White Miso Grilled Mero Set. The highlight of the meal was definitely the fish—it was well-grilled, tender, and flavorful with a lovely balance of sweetness from the white miso. The portion was satisfying and showcased the quality of the seafood.
However, I felt that the rice and miso soup were below average and didn’t quite match the standard of the fish. The rice lacked the fluffy texture you would expect from good Japanese steamed rice, and the miso soup tasted rather flat and uninspired. For a restaurant specializing in Japanese grilled fish sets, I was hoping for a more balanced experience across all components of the meal.
That said, the service was mediocre; I asked for the menu to add on my order, but it never came. The ambiance was simple, good for a quick, fuss-free meal. The menu offers a decent variety of grilled fish options, and if you’re mainly here for the fish, you won’t be disappointed.
Overall, I’d recommend Gyogyo if you’re craving well-grilled Japanese fish at a reasonable price, but there’s definitely room for improvement with the accompanying sides to elevate the full set meal experience.

The food was substandard. I ordered sushi and tempura udon. The udon was overcooked and the broth was so imbalanced; I had to drink a ton of water afterwards. Service also needs improvement. The price points do not match what you get. A disappointing meal.

Had lunch at GyoGyo at Plaza Singapura and really enjoyed the meal. Although the QR code ordering was down, the staff was there to take our orders. The Mayo Saba was the standout, nicely grilled with crispy skin and a creamy, savoury mayo that worked surprisingly well. The Chix Pasta came with tender, smoky chicken and a light, creamy sauce that wasn’t too heavy. We also had the Seafood Tomato Rice, which was rich and cheesy, kind of like a Japanese doria, though a bit on the salty side. We ended off with their Matcha Tiramisu, which had a good balance of bittersweet matcha and cream, not too sweet, and was a nice finish to the meal. Portions were generous, service was fast and friendly, and overall, it’s a good spot if you’re craving Japanese-style grilled or fusion comfort food.

Food was great! Ordered the shio sea bass rice set and mentaiko salmon sushi (to share). The rice and soup are refillable! I didn't fully utilize this as I only needed one refill, but it's always great to know it's an option.
The sushi was so yummy! It had a slight spice and was sooooo good. No notes. 10/10 would eat again. My friends got other items (can't remember sorry), I think it was the curry rice and two other fish sets, and all were so good.
I do want to note that when my friends and I went, there was only one server attending to the whole store, which was super hectic! So, do have some patience if there's lean manpower. It's good to also catch the eye of the kitchen staff just in case, so they'll help call out too. The server was great and really did her best.

We certainly aren't the earliest to discover this wonderful Japanese eatery gem, but as the whole family loves what it offers and finds the Japanese favourites to everyone's liking, we all agree unanimously it should be another family favourite.
What's not to love? GyoGyo is a friendly, casual restaurant that specialises in grilled fish dishes and sukiyaki. With roots in the food service business, it offers an extensive range of quality fish sets grilled to order, featuring various cooking styles such as Saikyo Yaki, Teriyaki, Shioyaki, Nitsuke, and Foil Yaki. The staples of donburi and spaghetti, with a wide range of protein options, pleased everyone with their choices.
I decided to try their Hamburg beef don as I was famished, and my baby girl vouched for how good their hamburger patty is. She's right. It's beautifully grilled on the outside, with the inside done medium-rare the way I like it. My wife changed her mind last minute to try the rare soft-shell crab donburi, while my son had his chicken don. Both were deliciously satisfying and filling. My daughter wanted a lighter meal before class, so she opted for the delish grilled Samma fish set. While we shared the gyoza to sample, it was stunningly good.
But, I must say, to me, the ultimate stunner that I wanted to bottle and have at home is the generous chilli oil condiment GyoGyo offers on the table. It is not only the bomb — it is for those of us who need the heat and spice kick — but is so well-balanced and nuanced. When added to anything, it is amazingly sublime. You get layers of umami flavours, and I could see little grilled fish bits added to elevate it to another level. I shamelessly asked if they bottle and sell it, but alas, they don't :(
The restaurant's concept focuses on providing a minimalist, comforting dining space with light wood accents, creating an ambience suitable for family and friends to gather. And the best part for us is it is halal!
Oh GyoGyo, we will be back.
PS: What a delight to return to a refreshed menu that makes the already fantastic choices even better. My son loves the new curry udon added to the menu. And the Kakiage lightly infused with truffle oil is absolutely a winner. Shout out to Remie, who was an attentive and wonderful, friendly server.

The food is consistently decent; I've been to the Funan outlet as well. I enjoyed my salmon sukiyaki, and my wife's grilled cod was really good too.
The main reason I'm posting a review is to commend the good service. The crew, while busy, attended to everyone's needs, from offering to add soup to refilling green tea. In one instance, a busy staff member heard a spoon fall at my table and immediately went to get another spoon without prompting. Thank you for the impressive service; keep up the good work. We will definitely return!
