GyoGyo represents a distinctive approach to halal Japanese cuisine in Singapore, specializing in authentic Japanese grilled fish preparations and traditional sukiyaki that honor time-tested cooking techniques while ensuring complete halal certification for Muslim diners seeking genuine Japanese dining experiences. This unique restaurant concept combines the precision and artistry of Japanese grilling traditions with the inclusivity of halal certification, creating dining destinations where diverse communities can explore authentic Japanese flavors.
Operating strategic locations including Funan Mall, Plaza Singapura at basement level with direct access to Dhoby Ghaut MRT interchange station, and VivoCity, GyoGyo ensures convenient access for customers throughout Singapore while maintaining consistent quality standards and traditional preparation methods that preserve the authentic characteristics of Japanese cuisine.
The restaurant signature focus on grilled fish showcases an extensive range of premium fish varieties including Salmon, Halibut, Saba, Mero, and Kama, each prepared using traditional Japanese grilling techniques that achieve perfect texture balances between crispy, caramelized exteriors and tender, flaky interiors. These preparations demonstrate the Japanese mastery of fire control and timing that creates distinctive flavors impossible to replicate through other cooking methods.
Traditional Japanese preparation styles include Saikyo Yaki featuring sweet miso marinades that penetrate fish with complex umami flavors, Teriyaki with glossy, savory-sweet glazes that showcase the perfect balance of soy sauce and mirin, Shioyaki emphasizing pure fish flavors enhanced only with perfect salt applications, Nitsuke showcasing simmered preparations in traditional Japanese broths, and Foil Yaki that steams fish in aromatic packages that preserve natural juices and delicate textures.
Beyond fish specialties, GyoGyo accommodates diverse preferences with expertly prepared Chicken, Ebi shrimp, premium Steak, and traditional Unagi eel preparations for those seeking alternatives to fish dishes. Each protein receives the same attention to traditional Japanese cooking techniques and quality ingredient sourcing that defines the restaurant culinary philosophy.
The menu extends to traditional Japanese set meals including Sukiyaki Gozen that combine premium ingredients in authentic hot pot preparations served with Japanese rice or udon noodles and traditional accompaniments. These set meal formats provide complete dining experiences that showcase multiple aspects of Japanese cuisine while maintaining affordable pricing and generous portion sizes.
Japanese rice bowls represent comfort food traditions, featuring premium ingredients served over perfectly prepared rice with traditional seasonings and garnishes that create satisfying meals ideal for both quick lunches and leisurely dinners. The rice preparation follows Japanese standards for texture, temperature, and flavor that complement rather than compete with the featured ingredients.
All grilled fish sets include traditional accompaniments of Japanese rice and miso soup, creating complete meal experiences that honor Japanese dining customs while providing balanced nutrition and satisfying portions. The miso soup, prepared using traditional dashi and miso techniques, provides the warming, umami-rich broths that define authentic Japanese meal structures.
The restaurant commitment to halal certification ensures Muslim diners can explore Japanese cuisine without dietary concerns, though the certification requires yearly renewal to maintain compliance with religious dietary requirements. This dedication to inclusivity makes GyoGyo an important bridge between Japanese culinary traditions and Singapore multicultural dining landscape.
The grilling techniques employed at GyoGyo preserve the natural flavors and nutritional values of premium fish while creating the distinctive textures and aromas that define exceptional Japanese grilled cuisine. The open kitchen concepts at various locations allow diners to witness the skilled preparation methods that transform fresh ingredients into authentic Japanese dishes.
The strategic mall locations provide convenient dining options for shoppers, office workers, and families while offering comfortable environments suitable for business lunches, casual dinners, and special occasion meals. The modern restaurant design combines Japanese aesthetic principles with contemporary comfort to create welcoming spaces.
Whether you are seeking authentic Japanese grilled fish prepared using traditional techniques, exploring halal-certified Japanese cuisine that maintains cultural authenticity, craving comfort food combinations of perfectly grilled proteins with traditional rice and soup accompaniments, or looking for quality Japanese dining experiences in convenient locations, GyoGyo delivers comprehensive Japanese cuisine that honors both culinary traditions and dietary inclusivity.

Friendly service, an open ambience, and good food options with appealing presentation are hallmarks of a good cafe. Sadly, the food quality is at best food court standard. The Mixed Tempura Udon ($13.90++) was served with a bitter-tasting broth, and the udon itself tasted average. The tempura (a mix of fresh prawns and vegetables) was let down by the batter. The Miso Grilled Halibut ($18.90++) featured fish that seemed fresh but had a burnt taste and hardly any flavour. The rice served was not Japanese rice, which is reasonably expected in a Japanese cafe at this price point. The miso soup was also bitter.

We decided to try GyoGyo Japanese Grilled Fish & Sukiyaki at Funan after seeing good reviews, but unfortunately, it was a letdown. The food quality was poor—our unagi bowl was extremely salty, and the miso soup was just as bad. The chicken sukiyaki wasn’t great either. For what we got, the total bill came to just over $60, which didn’t feel worth it at all. On the plus side, service was okay, and there was no wait for a table. However, with so many better options at the same price point in Funan, I wouldn’t recommend this place.

The food is average, and the service is non-existent. There was no greeting, warmth, or help. When I asked for pickled ginger for my maki, I was told they are not allowed to serve it separately, with no explanation. Even if there were an extra cost, which would be odd, at least let your customer know how to get some pickled ginger. It's a common condiment in a Japanese restaurant.

Not sure where the previous reviews came from.
Ordered: Shioyaki grilled sea bass set (), Aburi cheese beef Hamburg curry rice (), Aburi Trio Mayo Tamago ()
Firstly, it wasn't shioyaki as the fish didn't seem to be salt-grilled. It was bland and overcooked. The side dish of daikon was commendable.
Secondly, the beef Hamburg was tough, dry, and looked very different from the photo (you can compare it with the thicker Hamburg shown). The cheese slice was also disappointing, and the curry was average.
Thirdly, the tamago was average, but the mayo wasn't a Japanese brand.
Lastly, in terms of service, the tamago, which was meant to be a sharing dish, came last and very late. We had finished our main dishes and waited a while before the tamago arrived. (Please don't assume I didn't chase the staff or specify for it to come first.)

Grilled sweet and sour sea bass nice texture and taste slightly charred. White miso grilled halibut
The grilled sweet and sour sea bass had a nice texture and taste, with a slightly charred finish. The white miso grilled halibut was lightly flavored and had tender flesh. The set came with pickles and steamed vegetables, both of which were delicious. Overall, a good meal for those who enjoy fish.

Food was good, but I felt it lacked a depth of flavor. Staff was friendly, even with little interaction.

Super fulfilling and delicious! I love my pasta with Saba the most, and the prawn roll which doesn't have much prawn... lol. The beancurd udon soup wasn't that great, apparently. My husband said it was bland, maybe the taste wasn't there. But the grilled beancurd with mentaiko sauce was superb.

Even though we were already quite full, we couldn’t resist ordering more because everything looked so good. We had the sushi tuna floss roll (8 cuts), which was fresh and flavorful. The karubi set was incredibly tender and delicious, especially with the free refill of sukiyaki soup. The ebi furai don was perfectly crispy and flavorful, and came with a comforting miso soup.
Despite the restaurant being quite busy during lunchtime, the staff was very friendly, efficient, and helpful, ensuring we had everything we needed. The service was smooth, and the food was served promptly. The quality and portion sizes were great for the price, making it a fantastic value-for-money experience.

Had a late lunch, just nice, not too crowded. Waiting time was around 10-15 minutes for grilled fish. Staff are approachable, nice, and polite. Food is good at a reasonable price. Will definitely come back next time.
