Hjh Maimunah Restaurant represents the pinnacle of traditional Malay and Indonesian cuisine in Singapore, proudly carrying the prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition that acknowledges their exceptional quality and cultural significance in preserving authentic Southeast Asian culinary traditions. Established in the early 1990s with humble beginnings as a Middle Eastern-based catering service for Hajj travellers, the restaurant has evolved over three decades into Singapore's most celebrated Nasi Padang destination, with strategic locations at Jalan Pisang near Arab Street, Joo Chiat, and Kitchener Road that serve both local communities and international visitors seeking authentic regional flavors. Their complete halal certification ensures that their time-honored recipes and traditional cooking methods remain accessible to all communities while maintaining the cultural authenticity that has earned them recognition as custodians of Singapore's Malay culinary heritage.

The extensive menu at Hjh Maimunah showcases over 100 meticulously prepared items that span the complete spectrum of traditional Malay and Indonesian cuisine, featuring legendary signature dishes like Beef Rendang with its complex spice layers, Ayam Bakar Sunda with authentic grilling techniques, Lemak Siput Sedut celebrating traditional seafood preparations, and Tahu Telur representing classic comfort food excellence. Their approach to Nasi Padang follows authentic traditions where diners select from an abundant spread of pre-prepared dishes, each crafted using recipes passed down through generations and prepared fresh daily using traditional methods that create the intense, complex flavors that distinguish authentic regional cuisine from simplified adaptations. The comprehensive selection ranges from delicious fried snacks and flavorful kampung dishes to sumptuous home-made desserts, ensuring that every meal represents a complete cultural and culinary journey through the rich traditions of Malay and Indonesian cooking.

Hjh Maimunah's sustained success and Michelin recognition stem from their unwavering commitment to authenticity, quality consistency, and cultural preservation that transcends typical restaurant operations to become cultural ambassadors for traditional Southeast Asian cuisine. Their island-wide delivery services, elegant buffet catering, mini buffet options, and bento box offerings demonstrate their adaptability to contemporary dining needs while maintaining traditional preparation standards, making authentic Malay cuisine accessible for corporate events, family gatherings, and religious observances. The restaurant's reputation for delivering intensely flavorful dishes without excessive oil or grease, combined with their role in introducing generations of Singaporeans to authentic regional flavors, positions them as both culinary institution and cultural treasure that continues to educate palates while preserving the authentic tastes that define Singapore's rich Malay culinary heritage for future generations.

I ordered a Beef set at $8.50. I chose beef rendang, brinjal, and beans with firm beancurd. There was only one piece of beef, and the meat was very dry and tough. The seasoning of the rendang was good, but it didn't penetrate the meat, leaving the inside bland. Thankfully, the brinjal and beans were nice. Their sambal and chilli sauce are excellent, but the beef was really disappointing.

Newly opened at the renovated food court at B2 of City Square mall. I was craving some Ayam Bakar, but they had run out of it. So, I chose some green chicken curry over a helping of rice and drizzled it with the yummy chilli and black sauce. The curry was tasty, and the sauces added just the right kick. I was hungry for another helping, so I chose the Chicken Rendang this time. It was flavourful as well, and another drizzle of sauces helped a great deal. The total cost for both portions was a measly 9 SGD. The only downside is that the food sits out for a while and is served cold, so ask for a heated helping.

Please check your bill carefully before paying and leaving. I visited HJH City Square on September 11th at 1 PM for takeaway. I suspect I was overcharged. I contacted the company's customer service line, but after four days, I still haven't received a response. I asked if I was overcharged to ensure I don't provide incorrect information for this review. I ordered the beef set for $8.50 (beef rendang, tempe, begedil, and brinjal). At the cashier, I requested to add another fried chicken wing, to be packed separately. The male cashier seemed a bit impatient. The bill came up to $13.00. I paid in cash, took my change, and left. It was only after returning to the office that I realized the fried chicken wing cost $4.50?? I messaged customer service, and after some back and forth, HJH did not respond for four days. The food was okay, but this experience left a sour taste. Again, please check your prices carefully before paying and leaving.

Very bad service from the staff, especially one Indian man who was the cashier. When I asked for a bit of egg gravy on the sambal egg, he kept insisting the chilli was the same gravy as the egg gravy and reluctantly scooped some onto the egg. The colours for both were different; how could they be the same? Obviously, the colour of the chilli and the sauce looked different. On another occasion, I went there when the stall was closing. I think I was the last customer. The lady server gave me very little rice for my beef nasi padang, which cost me about $10. She told me I needed to add 50 cents for extra rice. Their business is already so good, but sadly, many greedy merchants like this are all over Singapore. Sad to say, no matter how rich you are, money cannot bring you to heaven lah.

I'm a regular customer to this cuisine and we buy from here quite often, my friends as well. Before, the service was very good and the staff always served with a smile. But today, the lady supervisor, Sofah, had a very bad attitude. She complained that I took too much chilli with a black face. As a service industry staff, and a supervisor here, Sofah acted very unprofessionally and provided no good service to customers. I've heard similar complaints from friends before. Today, I experienced her bad attitude myself, the same pattern as my friend last time. Now I understand why she was so angry. Customers come to buy food and pay money; we don't owe you money and have never done anything wrong. Very bad experience, I won't visit again if she is here.

Wah, the beef rendang is damn shiok β€” super tender and full of flavour, really power lah. The tahu telur is also one of their signature dishes. It’s crispy outside, soft inside, and the sweet sauce just makes it even better. Good texture, good taste β€” confirm must try!
