Mr Bean 2024 Apr. 2 stars to 1. $20: Not satisfying. Not value for money. Overpriced. Not sure if I will patronize again. Mr Bean has been around for so many decades, but perhaps the franchises are taking a blowback. Franchises are good for business and profits for the owner, but they can degrade the taste and freshness of food and tarnish the name. $3.60: The long-awaited curry chicken potato (not too spicy is good), but it's not as fragrant as before and way too salty, in fact, unevenly salted. They can go easy on the salt. Actually, no salt is needed if the ingredients are well marinated. $6.10: Hainanese porridge is very expensive, too small a bowl for the price. And maybe it's targeted for those who like all the condiments (MSG, fried onions, spring onions...), otherwise, it's flat. A good bowl of congee, three times the size with more flavor and ingredients, can be attained for $7. $2.75: Classic Beancurd is terrible. The syrup is not fragrant, not technically well cooked, and maybe the sugar used is wrong. It tastes and smells slightly sour, and the beancurd is not smooth but already slightly curdled. This issue was raised many years ago with an outlet outside Tampines MRT. And till today, it's still happening. The problem could probably be because it's made in a factory and not carefully transported to the outlets. $3.40: Almond Longan jelly is tasty but has a slightly sour aftertaste. _________________________________ 2021 Mr Bean in general, and not any particular outlet, has degraded. The soyabean milk is less fragrant, less tasty, and less milky. Once, from Tampines MRT, the beancurd was hard and not as smooth, even after a replacement. Another time from CompassOne, the beancurd with black sesame glutinous balls caused an upset tummy. Granola bars are tasty but contain some small hard beads which require carefulness not to bite on them, as they feel like they could crack teeth.
