Kitty and I were looking for a quick and affordable dinner option in Punggol, and Sukiya Gyudon • Curry at Waterway Point fit the bill perfectly. This Japanese restaurant specializes in gyudon (beef bowls) and Japanese curry rice, offering a wide variety of options to suit different tastes and appetites. We decided to try the Spring Onion Beef Yakiniku Bowl and the Teriyaki Salmon Bowl, both of which were quite delicious. I particularly loved the Spring Onion Beef Yakiniku Bowl. The tender yakiniku beef combined with the refreshing spring onions and fluffy rice was a perfect combination for me. The spring onions, the yakiniku, and the sauce created a harmonious blend of flavors that was truly delicious, and the addition of a half-boiled egg added richness and creaminess to the dish. It's worth noting that the spring onion beef yakiniku bowl is definitely a dish for true spring onion lovers. If you're not a big fan, there are plenty of other delicious options on the menu without spring onions. Kitty really enjoyed the Teriyaki Salmon Bowl, and the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce complemented the salmon beautifully. We both agreed that the Chicken Karaage Set, which we ordered as a side, was a great addition to our meal. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and went well with both the gyudon and the curry sauce. We also ordered the Tofu Set, which was a bit bland on its own. It was cold tofu, and we ended up adding soy sauce to bring out the flavor, making it more like a flavorful "Akatashi Tofu". To quench our thirst, we shared an iced lemon tea, a refreshing and classic pairing for Japanese cuisine. Sukiya offers customizable portion sizes, which is a great feature. I opted for the "M" size, which was just right for me and provided a satisfying meal. For those with a larger appetite, they have an extra-large bowl option available. The ordering process is straightforward and convenient. You can choose to scan a QR code for a digital menu or browse a physical menu for a more detailed look, which is nice for those who prefer to see a visual representation of the dishes before ordering. However, the customer service experience significantly impacted our enjoyment. While the staff were generally helpful and friendly, we had an unusual experience when we asked for additional spring onions for my Yakiniku Bowl. The staff member, after hearing our request, walked over to our table, visually checked our bowls, and then went to the kitchen. They then returned and asked for our receipt to confirm that we had indeed ordered the spring onion beef yakiniku bowl. This felt unnecessary, as we were clearly eating the dish, and it made us feel as if we were being accused of trying to get something for free. The staff member then informed us that the manager had said that they don’t provide additional spring onions and that we would have to pay for them if we wanted more. While we understand that there are policies in place, this interaction felt a little insensitive and unnecessary, especially given that our request was made after we had already ordered the spring onion beef yakiniku bowl. The interaction left us feeling uncomfortable, questioned, and ultimately, a little offended. Overall, Sukiya Gyudon • Curry at Waterway Point is a good option for a casual, budget-friendly Japanese meal. However, the customer service experience, particularly the handling of our request for additional spring onions, significantly detracted from our overall enjoyment. Sukiya is worth considering for a quick and satisfying meal in Punggol, but be aware that you may encounter unexpected responses from staff.
